SIMIEN LODGE – Simien Mountains

The original plan to build a lodge in the Simiens dates back to the times of Haile Selassie when a multi storey modern hotel was planned, which fortunately was never built. The modern day owners spent time looking at lodges in the national parks in Kenya before deciding to build a lodge which resembles a typical Simien village.

Architects were engaged in Addis and work started in October 2004. On the very first day some 150 people showed up for the 40 jobs being offered to dig the foundations. With the assistance of the village leaders an election was held for the first jobs. Only people who sent their children to school were eligible. The owners also stated that they wanted at least 25% women on site. The whole process was a success; democracy in action. From then on they decided that the village leaders would play a key role in recruitment and management.
There are twenty main rooms which are about 60 metres from the main restaurant area so as to provide total peace and tranquility. There are two rooms with double queen sized beds and all the other rooms have 2 large single beds. The single beds are one metre wide for a good night's sleep. The beds all have duvets but extra blankets are provided for those who feel the cold.

It is sometimes forgotten that the Simiens are high and at night it is cold. The chill is taken off the rooms with an underfloor heating system which works by solar energy. During the day, hot water is pumped underfloor and stored in the thick concrete floor. This raises the temperature by about ten degrees during the day.
The restaurant is a spacious area with a log fire centre piece. The kitchen is essentially Swiss made, hygienic and ergonomic. In the evening they serve a set meal which is prepared by the master chef Teschome. This is normally international fare but vegetarian and other religious food requests can be accommodated. An "A la carte" menu of Ethiopian and European food is served.
